ARE YOU DIGITALLY READY TO TEACH? (WEB TOOLS, Video, Sound and Animation)
There are around
350 million of internet users in the world and most of this great number of
users are the students who use more technology outside of the school than they
do in the classrooms. That’s why, keeping pace with new innovations and
technologies for the sake of teaching is very important in order to meet with
needs of z generation students’ characteristics. The technology we perceive and
the technology they use in real life are totally diverse regarding to
socioeconomic situation of the learners. The use of computers at school might
be limited and restricted in some schools and the way we implement lessons is
restricted to the digital knowledge of the teachers and ability to use smart
board technology in class in an effective way.
In addition, learning styles have an impact in increasing one’s
perception and development in learning by the help of smart technologies in
education. For instance, using multimedia sources to teach target words through
smart board could beneficial and effective for visual learners and they could
even develop their critical thinking skills by searching more on the internet
by accessing a lot more stuff than a teacher could teach in a limited time. But
how are they accessing a lot more information and are they getting the correct
data from the right sources? Those questions are popping up in our minds to
ponder out the future teaching tools and their use in classrooms. If a teacher
develops his skills to use web 2.0 technologies in his classes in a fruitful
way and apply it meaningfully by internalizing multimedia principles, would we
still have students who are suffering from split attention or redundancy effect
even without having knowledge of what’s their problem in processing new
concepts?
Hence, we all
educators need to take into consideration of the needs of our students by
finding out new tools and techniques to keep up with technology of our students’
era. With a better understanding of how to use digital tools, we as educators
can make differences in teaching by making learning more interactive and
integrated in proven instructional strategies with web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 is characterized specifically by the
change from static to dynamic or user generated content. There have been
numerous studies conducted based on the impact of using Interactive videos and animations
in learning regarding to Mayer’s Multimedia Principles. In his theory, he based on three fundamental cognitive
assumptions which are the dual channels processing information to construct
knowledge (Mayer, 2001). Moreover, Mayer also stressed that learners learn
better from animation and narration rather than narration alone (as cited in Ainsworth,
2008). In order to analyze the impacts of using animations in lessons, we need
more research to compare the outcomes of narrated animations in teaching at
different levels and ages.
